PaddleFish Diaries: Season 4, Ep 1

Time for the fourth season of paddlefish diaries and today was the first day of paddlefishing! With really low water levels and a really early spring melt the fishing is bound to be good. Today was an amazing 70 degrees with only 10-15 mph winds, it was an amazing day for ND spring. I actually got to go out on a boat today and try and escape form the crowds! A friend of mine owns a boat and was going out so I joined him. We went out to this sandbar near a place called the “west hole” and set up for the day. It was a good meeting of two different branches of the river and seemed to be a good spot.
I had heard before going out today that over 50 were caught before noon so there were a lot of fish being caught so I was really excited! But as paddlefishing goes, just because it should be good does not mean you will catch one. We were out on the sandbar from about 5:00 to closing at 9:00 and I only manged to roll one fish, and that turned out to be a carp judging by the evidence left on my hook!

I did manage to catch a small freshwater drum on my normal pole though so it was not a total fishless day! Oh well it was still a really nice day of fishing even if I did not get a paddlefish. However many people did, over 150 were caught on the day with one that I saw being over 100 lbs caught by a girl who couldn’t of been much heavier! I dont know if I will be able to go again tomorrow but most likely Sunday.

Also on an art side note, I also finished my Paddlefish painting today, just in time! Check it out, it is 15 x 20 in Acrylic on Illustration board. I hope to have prints up and available soon so if anyone wants any just let me know!

Amazing Pike day

Went fishing at the state park on the point on the other side of the marina and slammed the pike. Was out from 12-4 and caught over 10 pike, keeping 9 with the largest being right at 7 lbs. The spawn seemed to be mostly over albeit two of the fish still had eggs. Also saw a few catfish and some small white bass. Was an awesome day of fishing with smelt and for big pike. Water level was pretty average.

Early Catfish

Went out to Lund’s Landing again out in the Kayak. Managed two average pike, 4 average catfish, and several shiner. This was the first day I have seen both Catfish and Shiner so they must be moving in. There was a slight wind from the south and fishing was really good right at sunset on the wind side of the water casting deep.
